Winter Lights
The Town Council is pleased to announce that the Winter Lights are back on the Library Tree. It is a beloved symbol of Christmas that many of us remember fondly from our childhoods but has been dark for several years. From 2024 it will be shining brightly over the festive season after a big effort from the Town Council Winter Lights group to fund and manage the project.
Unfortunately, this year we will be without our traditional festoon lights that typically illuminate the streets in Windermere and parts of Bowness. These lights were previously installed by a dedicated “Winter Lights” volunteer group who informed us this summer, that due to declining numbers, they have taken the difficult decision to step down from this task.
In response to this challenge, the Town Council managed to appoint a contractor who carried out initial testing. But given the time afforded to us, combined with new Health and Safety legislation, that will require a substantial upgrade of lights, fixtures and fittings, we were unable to complete the work for Christmas 2024.
Bowness will still have the Christmas twinkle with the return of the lights on Bowness Promenade and in St Martin’s Square. These lights are part of a separate contract funded by the Town Council.
We are asking local businesses to make an extra effort with their decorations this year to bring festive cheer to the streets. To recognise their efforts the Town Council in association with the Chamber of Trade will be running the annual “Best Dressed Christmas Window” competition. There will be categories for Windermere Winner, Bowness Winner and the Chamber of Trade Overall Winner awards. New for 2024, in December, via our social media, we will be asking the public to vote for the People’s Choice Award.
